Guide to the perfect fake blood for your costume!

Guide to the perfect fake blood for your costume!

Have you ever wanted to add a little (or a lot) of fake blood to your costume but are overwhelmed with all the different varieties?

Fake blood comes in a variety of thickness and colours, so we have put together a handy guide for deciphering the different types of SFX blood.

Special FX Blood Thickness

The consistency of fake blood will differ based on their primary ingredient. If the first ingredients is ‘water’ or ‘aqua’ the product is likely a water based blood. Syrup based bloods will typically have a ‘corn starch’ base.

Water based bloods, like Mehron Squirt Blood, are your best choice for any instance where you want realistic running or dripping blood. Just be aware that they will dry over time! The water in the mixture evaporates and leaves behind a crusty red residue. If you are not sure if the blood you are buying is water based, check the ingredients list.

Other bloods are made with a syrup base. These bloods will not dry out, instead simply forming a skin over the top. This means that they will continue to look fresh all night, though take care not to wipe your effect away accidentally!

Some syrup bases bloods will drip a bit before settling in place, such as Mehron Stage Blood. While others are very thick and will stay in place. These bloods are great for filling in latex or silicon wounds, and Mehron Coagulated Blood is a great example of this kind of fake blood.

Special FX Blood Colours

Special FX blood generally comes in two colours; Arterial and Venous. Arterial blood mimics the bright red, oxygenated blood that is present in our arteries, while venous blood is a darker shade and similar to the blood that flows through the veins.

If you are wanting to create a fresh wound, the brighter Arterial colour is the way to go! Otherwise, for representing older injuries the darker Venous blood will look more aged.
